Presbyterian Corn SharePresbyterian Corn Share is a project to help the hungry in our world while at the same time creating a more positive working relationship between urban and rural congregations. Here's how it works. Presbyterian farmers find land and supply the labour, skill and equipment needed to grow a crop that can be utilized by the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. Through an agreement with the Federal Government the crop raised will be matched by the government on the ratio of 4 to 1. That means that every bushel harvested in this project results in five bushels of food grain being made available for the relief of hungry people in the world. Urban congregations like Chalmers participate by providing cash donations that help to underwrite the costs (e.g. buying seed, fertilizer, etc. and paying the costs of planting, harvesting and drying the crop). Much of the labour and land is donated without charge. We at Chalmers have been participating in this project since 1994 and this year we will again work in partnership with a group of farmers in the area of Kirkwall and West Flamboro who have organized a growing project. Special "Presbyterian Corn Share" envelopes are available in the narthex. These may be placed on the offering plates with your regular offering. There is a display of additional information about this project in the narthex. For more information on the Internet visit the Canadian Foodgrains Bank
